About the Department
The Department of Elementary and Early Childhood manages all aspects of teacher education for undergraduate and graduate initial teacher certification programs for pre-service teachers Pre K-through Grade 8. Teachers must have a broad academic background, strong pedagogical knowledge, as well as a practical understanding of school curricula and standards. Both the Elementary and Early Childhood programs offer a sequence of course work in the theory and practice of education and provide students with multiple field experience in Pre-K settings, elementary schools, and middle school settings. Our goal is to provide excellent preparation for new teachers while also offering professional development for faculty on campus and in the public schools. The integrated Bachelor’s and Master of Arts in Teaching program-The Urban Education Option- is designed for students who have an interest in teaching in urban settings. All programs are based on the School of Education’s conceptual framework for preparing exemplary professionals and are fully accredited by NCATE.
